The Bregenz Festival’s production for 2019, performed on the “floating” stage, will be Giuseppe Verdi’s opera "Rigoletto”.

As court jester to a lecherous duke, Rigoletto has to make jokes for a living. He keeps his daughter Gilda locked up at home, to protect her from other men. Monterone, whose daughter has already been defiled by the duke, curses Rigoletto for his mocking remarks. Suspecting nothing, Rigoletto unwittingly assists in Gilda’s abduction, allowing her to be brought to the duke as yet another conquest.

She, however, sees her capture by the duke as a chance to escape from the tyranny of her father. But he has engaged an assassin to put an end to the duke’s love affairs once and for all. As Rigoletto is about to throw the shrouded body into the water, he is suddenly reminded of the sardonic refrain “La donna è mobile” and fears for the life of his daughter....

Giuseppe Verdi’s gory but spectacular masterpiece is presented on the Bregenz stage for the very first time.
