Situated next to the village church in the Oberdorf district of Dornbirn, the old premises of F. M. Hämmerle elegantly hint at a classical style that reflects the international focus and former significance of this now-defunct Vorarlberg textile firm. Surrounded by a park, the three original buildings are now complemented by a new structure, an extension and a pair of connecting underground car parks.

These changes have revitalised this unique complex and added an array of new features including two-storey flats, lofts, doctor’s practices, offices and commercial enterprises. While the solid construction of the new buildings mirrors that of the older structures, their copper shell sets them apart. The imposing tower has also been topped off by a row of new mezzanine apartments, with the raised roof letting in plenty of light. Having given ample consideration to matters of historical preservation, details, ecology and cost-effectiveness, the building owners and architects succeeded in gracing one of Dornbirn’s most pleasant districts with a terrific blend of traditional and contemporary architecture.
