Kornmarktplatz
6900 Bregenz
Austria
Originally designed as a marketplace in the 17th century, Kornmarktplatz square in the centre of Bregenz came to be used primarily as a car park in the latter decades of the 20th century. By the 1990s, however, the City of Bregenz was already considering a redesign – and the construction of the Vorarlberg Museum afforded the ideal opportunity to establish a new square focused on culture. The new yellow road covering begins on the opposite side of Rathausstrasse road and marks the point from which pedestrians are given priority. Cultural attractions including the Vorarlberg Museum, the State Theatre and Kunsthaus Bregenz art gallery line the square, with skilful flower arrangements helping direct traffic and divide the area into zones. The city also returned to the idea of a bright and friendly road covering while redesigning the Leutbühel quarter and Römerstrasse road.
