Boasting a surprising sleekness and formal clarity for its time, this 1950s steel, glass and concrete structure offered an early hint of postwar modernism. Rathausstraße 1
6890 Lustenau
Austria
Boasting a surprising sleekness and formal clarity for its time, this 1950s steel, glass and concrete structure offered an early hint of postwar modernism. With its flat roof and generously proportioned window fronts, it was a world away from the traditional building styles that prevailed back then.

In the interior, which remains largely unchanged to this day, the town hall is still infused with the spirit of the age thanks to preserved features such as staircases, doors, wall and floor coverings, clocks, and lights. Not only do these charming touches bring the designs of the Fifties to life, they also form a perfect harmony with the exterior.

Both the timeless administration building and the extension completed in 2012 are historically protected as examples of architectural cultural heritage. Although this new addition differs from the original in terms of its style, materials and technology, it remains a fitting complement to its older counterpart while also housing extra office space and meeting facilities.

Adelheid Gnaiger was a pioneer of modern architecture in Vorarlberg. Having begun her freelance career in Feldkirch in 1950, she completed numerous public building projects such as banks, schools and administration buildings as part of the Gnaiger/Götsch/Griss architectural collective.

Architecture: Adelheid Gnaiger, Paul Götsch, Walter Griss, 1958
